WP2 (Urban ecologies) investigates health/safety challenges, environmental impact and waste management governance, but also explore the role of tyres in shaping road/street ecologies (for instance their informal reuse as street furniture or items of display). Here tyres are considered as simultaneously technical and aesthetic frictional infrastructures, whose everyday materiality is ‘central to the sensory, somatic, and affective ways’ in which residents inhabit the mega-city (Appel et al. 2018: 25, Larkin 2013). To assess tyre-related challenges and measure the impacts of ELTs on local communities we will work closely with residents and stakeholders of 3 case study areas with a view to develop community-led sustainability and monitoring plans.
